Our food distribution ministry was established in 2019 shortly after we moved into our current facility (May 2018). Also known as Hearts for the People Food Ministry, this team was started by Missionary Gina Andrews and our own First Lady, Shernetta Evans. With a loving, fun, and dedicated bunch of Open Door members, food is distributed to the community in the parking lot of the church each 1st and 3rd Monday of the month.
At 9am the Gleaners Food Bank truck arrives and delivers boxes and crates of food, perishable and non-perishable. While cars line up in the parking lot (that sometimes wraps onto 7 mile) the team organizes the food for quick and effective service. Each car then drives up to the front of the line and receives bags and sometimes boxes of food with a smile and are encouraged to come back next time for more free food. If there’s a very large delivery, signs are posted and cars are flagged to come and receive free food. Prior to the COVID Pandemic there was also free food and items distributed one Saturday a month on the inside of the church building and community members could come inside and “shop” for items that they wanted.
Thanks to the many generous donations provided by The Open Door and other anonymous givers along with our partnership with Gleaners Food Bank we’ve been blessed to serve approximately 3,000 families to date. We endeavour to keep serving our community and feeding the hungry as long as God allows us.
